David Lang

Compositeur américain né le 8 janvier 1957 à Los Angeles, Californie

David Lang est diplômé des universités de Stanford (1978), d’Iowa (1980) et de Yale (1989). Il a eu pour professeurs Jacob Druckman, Hans Werner Henze, Martin Bresnick, Roger Reynolds et Henri Lazarof.

En 1987, il fonde Bang on a Can avec Michael Gordon et Julia Wolfe. Cette organisation, dont les trois fondateurs sont également directeurs artistiques, donne chaque année une série de concerts à New York, les Marathon Concerts, organise des tournées internationales avec son ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars, et passe commande à de nombreux compositeurs comme Terry Riley, John Adams, Michael Nyman, Ornette Coleman.

En 1992, David Lang est compositeur en résidence à l’American Conservatory Theater de San Francisco.

Son catalogue, riche de plus de cent cinquante œuvres, aborde tous les genres de musiques. Ainsi, are you experienced? est inspiré par l’œuvre de Jimi Hendrix, tandis que death speaks est un cycle de chansons d’après Schubert et interprété par des musiciens de rock, ou encore the whisper opera est un opéra chuchoté par la soprano Tony Arnold accompagnée par des membres de l’International Contemporary Ensemble. Son opéra anatomy theater, dont il a écrit le livret en collaboration avec l’artiste plasticien Mark Dion, place les spectateurs dans la position du public du XVIIIe siècle assistant aux dissections publiques de criminels. Sa pièce chorale the public domain est créée en août 2016 sous la direction de Simon Halsey sur le campus du Lincoln Center, avec un chœur réunissant plus de mille chanteurs volontaires.

David Lang a collaboré à plusieurs reprises avec des chorégraphes, comme Susan Marshall (play/pause), Édouard Lock et La La La Human Steps (amelia), Benjamin Millepied et le New York City Ballet (plainspoken).

Il a également composé plusieurs musiques de film parmi lesquelles : Untitled pour le film éponyme de Jonathan Parker et simple song #3 pour le film Youth réalisé par Paolo Sorrentino.

Ses œuvres ont été jouées notamment par la BBC Symphony, l’International Contemporary Ensemble, eighth blackbird, le Santa Fe Opera, le New York Philharmonic, le Netherlands Chamber Choir, le Boston Symphony, le Munich Chamber Orchestra et le Kronos Quartet.

David Lang est lauréat de nombreux prix. Sa pièce the little match girl passion, commandée par le Carnegie Hall pour l’ensemble Theater of Voices, a reçu le prix Pulitzer en 2008. Il a également reçu le Prix de Rome, le Musical America’s Composer of the Year, le Carnegie Hall’s Debs Composer’s Chair, et le BMW Music-Theater Prize de Munich.
